Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Insight and how it works.

Biological age
What is biological age and how is it different from my real age?

Your chronological age is simply how many years you've been alive. Your biological age reflects how well your body is functioning at a cellular and physiological level — and it can be younger or older than your chronological age depending on your lifestyle, genetics, and health choices.

Two people who are both 45 years old can have biological ages of 38 and 52 respectively. The one with the lower biological age has cells and organs that are functioning more like a younger person's.

How does Insight calculate my biological age?

Insight uses the PhenoAge algorithm, developed by Dr. Morgan Levine at Yale University and published in Nature Aging. It combines nine blood biomarkers drawn from a standard blood panel — albumin, creatinine, glucose, hsCRP, lymphocyte percentage, MCV, RDW, alkaline phosphatase, and white blood cell count — to produce a biological age estimate.

This methodology has been validated in large epidemiological studies and shown to predict mortality, disease risk, and physical function better than chronological age alone.

Which biomarkers are needed and where do I get them?

You need the following nine values from a standard blood panel:

  • Albumin (g/L)
  • Creatinine (µmol/L)
  • Fasting glucose (mmol/L)
  • hsCRP — high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (mg/L)
  • Lymphocyte percentage (%)
  • MCV — mean corpuscular volume (fL)
  • RDW — red cell distribution width (%)
  • Alkaline phosphatase (U/L)
  • WBC — white blood cell count (×10⁹/L)

These are all part of a routine complete blood count (CBC) and comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), which you can request from your GP, a walk-in clinic, or a private lab like LifeLabs or Dynacare.

How often should I test to track my biological age?

We recommend testing every 3–6 months. This gives your body enough time to respond to lifestyle changes — like improved diet, exercise, sleep, or supplementation — while also giving you a clear trend over time.

Testing more frequently than every 8 weeks can introduce noise from short-term fluctuations (e.g. a recent illness or a poor night's sleep), so quarterly testing tends to give the most meaningful signal.

Can I improve my biological age?

Yes — and this is the point. Biological age is modifiable. The biomarkers measured by PhenoAge respond to changes in lifestyle, particularly:

  • Regular aerobic and resistance exercise
  • A diet high in whole foods and low in processed sugar and refined carbohydrates
  • Consistent sleep of 7–9 hours per night
  • Managing chronic stress and inflammation
  • Avoiding or minimising smoking and excess alcohol

Studies have shown biological age reductions of 1–3 years within 8 weeks of lifestyle intervention.

Getting started
How do I enter my lab results?

Go to the Biomarkers page and click "+ Add manually" — you can enter any biomarker value from your lab report, including the 9 used for biological age. Make sure you're using the correct units — the form labels match exactly what appears on a standard Canadian lab report.

Once all nine biological age values are entered, your score is calculated automatically and displayed on your dashboard.

Do I need all nine biomarkers to get a result?

Yes — the PhenoAge formula requires all nine biomarkers to produce an accurate biological age estimate. If you're missing one or two values, we're unable to calculate a score, as partial inputs would give a misleading result.

If your lab report is missing a specific marker (e.g. hsCRP is sometimes on a separate panel), ask your doctor to add it to your next requisition.

What is the blood pressure tracker for?

Blood pressure is one of the most important and actionable cardiovascular health markers. The blood pressure tracker lets you log readings from a home monitor or clinical visit, and see your classification (normal, elevated, stage 1 high, etc.) at a glance.

On Insight+ and above plans, your blood pressure trend over time is also charted, letting you and your doctor see whether interventions are working.

Plans & billing
What's included in the free plan?

The free plan gives you three months of full dashboard access with up to 3 lab report uploads. It covers biomarker tracking, Health Story, and trend charts. What it doesn't include is biological age and full Insights — those unlock with Insight+.

You can upgrade to Insight+ or join the Clinical waitlist at any time from the plans page.

What is Insight Clinical?

Insight Clinical is our most comprehensive offering — a 50-biomarker blood panel we arrange at a LifeLabs location near you, combined with a Creyos online cognitive assessment, and a written clinician review personalised to your results.

It covers metabolic, cardiovascular, hormonal, thyroid, and neurological markers — including ApoE genotyping, amyloid beta, phospho-tau, and neurofilament light. Biological age score and a full year of Insight+ dashboard access are included. Clinical is currently in waitlist — join the waitlist to be notified when it's available in your area.

How do I cancel my subscription?

You can cancel at any time by going to Billing & plan and clicking "Cancel subscription", or by emailing support@insighthealth.ca.

Cancellations take effect at the end of your current billing period. You'll keep full access until then and will not be charged again after that date.

Is my payment information secure?

Yes. All payments are processed securely through Stripe, a PCI DSS Level 1 certified payment provider. Insight never stores your full card number, expiry, or CVV — these are tokenised and held securely by Stripe.

Privacy & data
Who can see my health data?

Your health data is private by default. Only you and the Insight physicians you've messaged — with your explicit consent — can access your results. We do not sell or share your data with third parties, advertisers, or insurers.

If you share data with your care team (via the Chat feature), those physicians can see your biomarker values and blood pressure readings to give you more informed advice. You can withdraw consent at any time from your profile settings.

Where is my data stored?

Your data is stored securely in Canada on servers provided by Supabase (which runs on AWS), in compliance with Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA). All data is encrypted at rest and in transit using industry-standard AES-256 and TLS 1.2+.

Can I export or delete my data?

Yes. You have the right to request a full export of your data or to have it permanently deleted. To make a data request, email support@insighthealth.ca and we'll process your request within 30 days in accordance with Canadian privacy regulations.

You can also initiate account deletion from your profile page, which will schedule permanent deletion of all associated health data.

Is Insight a medical service?

Insight is a health monitoring and information platform, not a regulated medical service or replacement for professional medical care. The biological age score, biomarker flags, and any information provided through the platform are for educational and informational purposes only.

If you have concerns about your health, please consult a qualified healthcare professional. In an emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.
